“The Scream” by Edvard Munch, National Gallery, Oslo
The title of this post isn’t some romantic notion or the beginning of a navel-gazing ramble. It’s how I describe a fabric I have been working with over the weekend. I took time off from my Pucci blouse to resume working on the super-triple-secret project. It’s made with this fabric that I would also describe as the Russell Crowe or Naomi Campbell of fabric. A beautiful, but highly temperamental silk. Every time I walk in the sewing room, I wonder if it’s going to throw a phone at me. Have you ever had a fabric like that?
I’m the Fabric Whisperer. I can tame anything. But this fabric darned near drove me to drink. And do I make some easy, no-sew piece out of this beast? Of course not! It’s a very complex product that requires a whole lot of seams. Even after achieving the right results using hand basting, the fabric slipped out of alignment when I sewed it on the machine. I ripped out one seam and re-did it 6 times before it finally lay down and whimpered. And it only beat me to that state by seconds.
Well, the outer shell is done. Now I just have to put the inner construction together and get it out to the client. I will post a picture of it eventually. But for now, believe me, it’s probably best if I put a little distance between myself and it.
Happy sewing!
