After being unable to work on the trench most of this week, I spent some time on it today. I was able to get the silk organza underlinings attached. Here you can see some pictures of the progress.
Both collar pieces now have three layers: lace, charmeuse and organza. Here’s the collar with the lace side up:

And here you can see the organza and the lace, sandwiching the charmeuse:

I applied the organza to the fronts as well. On the right side, I stitched it to both the charmeuse and the lace up to the CF, then I just stitched it to the charmeuse, leaving the lace free. I’ll tack the lace down once the lining is attached, so the scallops don’t get caught.

And to give you a sneak peek into what the finished product will look like, here are the fronts overlaid at the CF

Parting Shot: When Good Homebrews go Bad
DH went with some friends to one of those homebrewing places last winter and made some beer. I’m not a beer drinker, so I had no idea how it turned out. Until today. This morning, the boys were getting breakfast when something went “Bang!”. I came out, and we had been struck by an IEB (Inadvertent Exploding Beer). Here’s the carnage:

And here’s the culprit:

Happy sewing!
That trench will be to die, if you’ll pardon the expression. And the beer, may I just say: ewwww!
WOW – the lace is looking very lovely – so much work – can’t wait to see the finished product ….. and CABOOM – the beer looks lethal – must have left an interesting aroma around the kitchen!
I am enjoying following along as you construct this beautiful coat. What a statement piece it will be. My sister makes beer too, but I don’t think she has had one explode yet… What I want to know is, “Who had to clean it up?” Glad no one was hurt!
I cleaned up the mess, Shannon. DH was at the gym. I never realized how many pots and pans I had until I had to take out each one and clean it!
Oh yeah! Fortunately for me, exploding beer occurred for my dh before we started dating! And it happened at his parents’ house. Now we just have all this equipment and he never brews any more. Sad because he’d gotten good at it!
I have no lace in my wardrobe, but that lace trench is a great idea! You are single-handedly (single-needledly?) making me reevaluate lace!
I don’t make beer, but I do have a collection of sourdough bread cultures, and when one of those is at room temp for feeding, goes exponential and overflows, wow what a mess!
So unfun!
This happened to us once…we had the homebrew in the bathroom near the heat register to keep it warm and happy. We had put it into some champagne bottles, because they’re really sturdy, right?
Well, during the night one of them burst. Apart from the terrified feeling that you get when you are awakened at 3am by an unfamiliar loud noise, there was the mess to clean up….
Oh my gosh, does this episode bring back memories!! My mom used to make root beer with us when we were kids, and I loved the mystery of it all. We never knew if it was drinkable until we opened the bottle weeks later. Sometimes it was good, sometimes it was awful. But the mess of an exploding bottle under the stairs in a stone basement lasts (nearly) forever!
And more importantly, the lace trench is going to be lovely!
