Spring Combo!

Phyllis and I spent much of the day working together yesterday. After we finished, we went to my house for wine and fashion talk, along with dish! How fun was that! I’m taking Susan Khalje’s Class, “The Couture Dress” on Craftsy, and I’ve been debating about the fabric I want to use for my dress. The pattern they supply for the class is this Vogue:

Vogue 8648

Yesterday, Phyllis helped me pick out the fabric for it, and then she went to town styling it for Spring by combining it with a bag and shoes. Prints that “clash” are all over the runways for spring. I figure I’ll wear it to the Couture Club of Chicago fashion show in May and look fabulous!

Love the contrast!

Alas, there is one slight problem. When I went to adjust the inventory for the silk fabric, I discovered someone had bought the last of it. Sniff! See? I own the store, and even I miss out on fabrics sometimes! Time to make some calls tomorrow morning to see if I can get another bolt.

Stay tuned!

Wishing you successful Monday morning phone calls – like only one! That will produce a bolt!

    An absolutely stunning outfit!

  2. Najah says:

Oh, I do hope you acquire more of that fabric…the preview of your clashing prints outfit makes me eager to see it in final form (and inspires my spring dress sewing).

  3. Carolyn says:

I hope you are able to get another bolt of the fabric – because the dress will be amazing in that silk twill!

  4. Debbie Cook says:

I love the dress and fabric, but be warned that this is the Vogue dress I had so much trouble fitting last year that I just gave up. I’ll be curious to hear whether it works for you (and the class). I sure hope so!

The cardinal rule of this type of print “clash-matching” (I just made that up!) is to use the odd number rule, e.g. odd numbers of things are inherently more interesting than even numbers. So in the bag fabric five colors relate to the same colors in the fashion fabric (reddish pink, yellow, pink, green and light blue) and then the shoes, which met with some resistance but I said “humor me” :) , there are three colors (black, white and red) that also appear in the bag and the fashion fabric. Another option would be to go with a really neutral shoe like a beige patent leather or a grey suede if this type of bold color combination is not one’s cup of tea.

I love that mix of prints!

I am enrolled in that class. Loved it. Now I am practicing the techniques on a simple vest.
Which view of the dress are you making? The full skirt is a full circle. I think I will substitue either Paco Peralta’s half circle skirt or Pamela Leggett’s bias skirt a little less than half circle.
I hope you get some more silk. That is gorgeous. And I hope the fitting goes better for both of us than Debbie’s experience.

  8. Allyn says:

What a fabulous combination! I’m quite vexed that I’ll have to miss the Chicago get-together, which promises to be a stunning collection of well-dressed women!

  9. Kim Hood says:

I signed up for this course last night – I am looking forward to planning what to make the dress in now.
Your choices are lovely – good luck getting more of that fabric!

  10. Ramona says:

Can’t wait to see the finished product. Should be beautiful!

  11. Amy says:

Oh yay! I’m glad you’re enrolled in the class. It will be fun to see your beautiful creation, especially since you’ll be pairing it with such fun prints.

I’ve watched about half the videos and have learned a lot. She’s such an incredible teacher.

I’m still trying to narrow down my fabric choices. I might use this cotton floral twill from your shop. Hmm…

  12. Pam Erny says:

Ann (and Phyllis)..wow what a great combination!

  13. Glenys Brown says:

I have just finished the Jilly Jean from Style Arc. I found the fronts to be much narrower than the backs. The result is that the side seam is far too much forward. I guess one could widen the front and reduce the back. It is a shame as they look very good in a medium weight 5% lycra denim. The pattern includes a curved waistband which fits beautifufully and enables one to finish each side of the back and then sew together with one seam at the centre back. This is so good for fitting into a concave back and for alterations in future .
I suppose I might just have the wrong shaped bottom?

Euwwww I am completely GREEN with envy over that Milly Poppy bag!! I must have one – there will be no groceries in this house until I do!
