New Tools!

L-R: Fashionary, Shoulder Stand, Fashion Sketchpad

Thanks to Pam, I got turned on to a new pressing aid, the Shoulder Stand. What a cool idea! It makes shaping your shoulders so much easier.

I also got two sketchpad books from Amazon. I don’t do a lot of sketching, mostly because I totally suck at it, but I wanted to check them out as potential gifts for some of my young friends who are interested in design. Of the two, Fashionary and The Fashion Sketchpad, the Fashion Sketchpad is much better. It has larger croquis that are easier to see on the page. It also has several different poses. Fashionary only has one pose – straight on. If you need or want to do sketches, I’d recommend the Fashion Sketchpad.

Oh, and recognize the jacket on the shoulder stand? I am finally getting back to my Chanel jacket. I put it aside when the weather started to get warm, but it’s time to finish it up! More on that later…

Happy sewing!

Oh, Ann! Thank you, thank you, thank you! A thousand “thank you”s.

I have been looking for a shoulder block for more than ten years without success, ever since a teacher in college loaned me hers and I saw how quickly and easily a beautiful sleeve head could be shaped. At one point I thought I might make one in my step-dad’s wood shop, but that option is no longer available. So I’ve labored with my steam iron all these years, knowing all the while there was an easier way if I could just get my hands on one of these tools again. And now I can buy one. Yea!

I have already emailed the Etsy shop this morning to make inquiries on the details. Oh, my goodness, I am so excited and I haven’t even had any caffeine yet! Thank you again for featuring this tool on your blog.

Reading about new tools is always a treat. Is there an advantage of this over the curve on the June Tailor press board? I notice that this shoulder stand seems to be thicker. And maybe more stable for heavier duty pressing?

Gail, if you have a pad for the June Tailor board, it would probably give you similar results. I don’t have the pad for it, and I’ve never been really happy with it for that reason. This one is more stable than the JT, as well. That’s not a dis against JT – it’s a great tool that I use a lot. I just prefer this for shoulders.
