Next Up – The Winchester Hospital Gala Dress!

This year I decided to go the easy route. I’m going to make a dress from a pattern that I already made once, McCalls 6556. This time, I’m taking their suggestion to make it as a top. I’ll lengthen the slip dress that comes with it (or maybe I’ll use a different, more bra-friendly pattern, I haven’t decided) to floor length and make that from a black jersey.

I’m all for this one!

The key word is comfort this year, but of course it will still be fabulous. I’m making the top from a (sold out, sorry!) sequined fabric from Gorgeous Fabrics (of course). This pattern is super easy, and it only took me about an hour to sew it this far. I’m debating about how I want to finish the neckline, armholes and hems. It’s between plain old narrow hem, bias silk organza binding or fold-over elastic. I’ll decide that this week. Here’s a picture of the top so far on Shelley.

I think this will be very fun. And comfortable!

More later. Happy sewing!

What a fabulous idea! I may steal this for an evening dress for my upcoming cruise. As for the “slip dress”, you might want to consider the Jamie Christina Maxi Dress . . . it looked fabulous on you!

I love that color! How about an edge to edge lining in silk jersey? A binding or narrow hem feels like a sporty finish to me. With a lining way all of the edges are clean and if the back of the fabric is itchy (sequin almost always itches me) it will be more comfortable to wear.

Wow! Wow! Wow! I’m loving the color and shine of the top. You’re right this will be a comfortable yet stylish outfit with a lot of vavavoom!
