I saw Mimi G.’s review and I decided I really liked the look, so I picked it up. I realized recently that since I lost a little weight, I needed a new LBD, and I figured this would fit the bill.
Pattern Description: (from Vogue’s website) Lined dress has fitted bodice variations, midriff, tapered or flared skirt and back zipper. C and E: side front and side back seams, and side pockets. A, B, D and F: semi-fitted skirt and back slit. D, E and F: bias front bodice with fold-back facing.
I made View B, the long sleeved asymmetric neckline version.
Sizing: 6-22. I started with a size 14, but trimmed it down to about a 12.
Fabric Used: Designer Heavy Double Knit in Black (sold out, sorry) from Gorgeous Fabrics.
Did it look like the photo or drawing when you got through? Yes
How were the instructions? Good – There aren’t any surprises in this pattern, but if you are a relative newbie or like to read the instructions like me, they are helpful.
Construction Notes: I made an FBA and (sigh) lowered the bust point. I also decided to forego lining this dress. The fabric I chose has a lot of stretch to it and is really really comfortable and soft, so I wanted to let it do its thing without a lining that might be constricting. Also, since this winter has been so freaking dry, I decided to not use a tricot lining. I cut a facing for the neckline, which I understitched and then topstitched:
Here you can see the inside of the front. The white thread is there because I started serging the gathered bodice seam with the thread that was already in the serger. Doh!
I used an invisible zipper, and I serged all the major seams:
Likes/Dislikes: You know, there are very few patterns in which I fall hopelessly in love. This is one of the few. It sews ups well, it looks great on, and it is so good for so many body types. I just. Love. It!
Would you do it again? Would you recommend it? Yes and Oh god, yes!
Conclusion: A great, great pattern. Sexy without being skanky, good for all ages and all seasons. Seriously? Love. It! Here are pictures on Shelley. I’ll get DH to take pictures of me when we go out for our post Valentine’s date. He has to travel that week so we’ll go out later. But this is a great pattern!
My Week In New York!
I don’t often get to socialize when I go on buying trips these days. I fly or train in, do my buying, have dinner with colleagues and vendors, then zip back home. But this week, I had an evening to myself, and I got together with friends for dinner. I had already had the pleasure of spending great times with Marina, Devra, and Rosie, but this was the first time I had met Peter or Patricia. We dished, we ate steak frites and we had a MARVELOUS time! And I only spilled ONE glass of wine, contrary to popular belief! (All pictures are courtesy of Peter)
