Thoughts on Butterick B6494 Top

Thoughts on Butterick B6494 Top

Dec 15, 2019Ann Steeves

I made this pattern a couple of years ago for my now-defunct Craftsy class, and I loved it. Alas, I made it in a sample size that is a wee bit too tight and short for my comfort level, so I decided to make it again, this time for moi and moi alone. I made the view B top, in a pattern that includes a dress (the longer version of the top, which is totally cute), pants, and a vest.

This pattern goes together quickly and easily. It's well drafted and I really like the lines. The princess seams, in a knit, are far less fiddly, so this is a good pattern for beginner to advanced beginner sewists.

I used a size 12, and added a FBA along with a little more room at the waist. I may not have needed that, since my fabric is much more forgiving than the one I used for the Craftsy sample.

I used Ladybug Ladybug Embroidered Henley Knit. Can I take an aside here and tell you how much I love this fabric? It's so cute! I originally bought it for the store thinking it would be a good children's fabric, which it is, but I fell in love with it for me, so here you go!

As I mentioned, this pattern goes together quite easily. I serged all the seams, and I used my coverstitch to do the hems.

One thing to note about this fabric and my use of it is that the embroidery stops about 5 inches from one selvage. That's fine, and in fact, it's very helpful, because embroidery can get thick, so I cut the undercollar and the facings from the un-embroidered fabric. I interfaced both of those pieces with tricot knit interfacing from Fashion Sewing Supply

The pattern calls for 1 1/4 inch hems, and usually I use a stabilizing tape on my hems when I run them under the coverstitch. This time I just folded and stitched, so they are a little softer and less structured.

This is a fun pattern to make. I started cutting it out at noon and I was finished by 4.  I definitely recommend it. Here are pictures on Shelley:
